With lockdown our collective new way of life for the moment, our pursuit of culture remains a little closer to home. We’re lucky that culture comes into our day jobs but there is always room for more. So, we thought it would be nice to ask some of our friends what they’re reading, watching, listening to and getting delivered at the moment. Plus, if they have any tips for getting through this latest lockdown.

To kick things off, we spoke with our dear friend Olly Dixon: a man who was there with Margaret from the very start, as well as a former co-founder who has since flown the nest to bring to the world ‘seltzers for the curious’, Something & Nothing.

Since then, Sarah Bemand has invited us into her lockdown world. From her favourite local coffee roasting alchemists, to the perfect necessity everyone needs for these cosy evenings indoors.

This week, we are joined by Paul Firmin, Co-Founder of creative business and lifestyle store Earl of East. Continue reading for a much-needed dose of cultural recommendations, ranging from his go-to podcasts and playlists, to inspirational reads for upcoming entrepreneurs.

“For all the budding entrepreneurs out there we would strongly recommend this guide from Courier magazine. Hopefully this is the first of many guides from one of our favourite magazines. Courier has always been so supportive of Earl of East and reading it religiously has given us so many hints and tips over the years.”

“We are binge watching a lot recently, but the standout for us in recent weeks is The Serpent. It’s so gripping, and very well shot.

We followed this with Night Stalker, a documentary about a serial killer in California in the 80’s which is on Netflix.

We would also suggest watching The Morning Show on Apple TV. This was our top pick from last year, and so many people have yet to watch it.”

“Shameless plug. Over the course of the last year, we have curated a series of playlists inspired by our scents, just search Earl of East on Spotify.

I’ve also been listening to A LOT of podcasts, we have finally listened to every episode  of Table Manners and HOSTEing with Laura Jackson.

Both have a knack for making you feel like you’re in the room with them.”

“The guys from L’Estrange opened a new spot in Westbourne Grove just before the last lockdown.

The space was designed by Fred Rigby who also worked with us on our newest space BookWorkShop.

We’ve loved watching some businesses take risks during this time, especially when

it comes to physical retail space.

We are also massive fans of Shop Cuvée. They have single-handedly got us back into wine and we have just collaborated with them on their Valentine’s Dinner Kit.”

“Travel has always been a huge inspiration, giving us perspective and new ideas, so having that taken away has been pretty rough.

Instead, what I have been really inspired by this year is the resilience and determination of the many independent brands, makers, and artists from within my own community.

When things have felt difficult, seeing the collective effort of everyone has given us the driving force to keep pushing through.”
